Our mission is to develop, promote and coordinate traffic safety initiatives designed to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and fatalities on Utah's roadways. Stopping drunk driving is a top priority.

Unfortunately, there’s still a lot of work to be done. In 2011, Utah law enforcement made 13,525 DUI arrests. Nationally, nearly 11,000 people die every year due to drunk driving. The good news, however, is that DUI fatalities and injuries are decreasing statewide.

The Highway Safety Office Alcohol Program provides overtime shift funding for law enforcement to conduct high-visibility DUI-enforcement and mobilizations, as well as monies for impaired-driving media campaigns. Our office also provides funds for high school and college campus programs for alcohol/drug prevention, and we offer specialized training for law enforcement officers regarding youth alcohol enforcement.
